This is a HANDS-ON course.

Dr. Daniel Haas's course on Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office is a prerequisite for this course.

The course must have been completed within two years prior to taking this Sedation course. It must have been completed in-person (not online/Utooth). To ensure that the course content meets the necessary requirements, the course must have been taken through Continuing Dental Education, University of Toronto.

Our Oral Sedation and Nitrous Oxide Sedation course is designed to train dentists in minimal sedation and moderate sedation, achieved by oral administration of a single sedative drug, the administration of nitrous oxide-oxygen, or the combination of a single oral sedative drug with nitrous oxide-oxygen. This course meets the requirements of the RCDSO (Standards of Practice – Use of Sedation and General Anesthesia in Dental Practice) as a training program in the aforementioned modalities of sedation.

Course content includes a review of:

  • Minimal Sedation
  • Moderate Sedation
  • Oral sedative pharmacology
  • Oral sedation regimens
  • Nitrous oxide pharmacology
  • Nitrous oxide equipment and administration
  • Monitoring
  • Respiratory physiology
  • RCDSO Guidelines

Participants must pass two multiple choice exams and an airway skills assessment to be considered having successfully completed this course. Course study material will be sent to participants three weeks prior to course start date in preparation for exams. Those who pass all assessments will be considered qualified to administer minimal and moderate sedations as described in the RCDSO standards, by means of nitrous oxide-oxygen, or a single oral sedative, or the combination of these two.

For more information on obtaining authorization to administer sedation, please see RCDSO website (Authorization to Administer Sedation and General Anesthesia).
