Our Implant Residency for Practicing Dentists course is designed for general dentists who want to begin performing both the surgical and prosthetic components of dental implant treatment. This course meets the initial educational requirements of implant dentistry as set out by the RCDSO (Educational Requirements & Professional Responsibilities for Implant Dentistry). In this 16-day course, participants will take part in lectures and hands-on training with the opportunity to treat two cases with the supervision of Faculty instructors. Upon completion of this course, participants may begin to treat cases involving straightforward placement and/or restoration of dental implants on their own.

This course includes both the surgical and prosthetic components of implant treatment and will cover the following topics:

• Treatment Planning
  • Digital workflow – from planning to the final restoration (including intra-oral scanning preoperatively, digital planning, surgical guide fabrication, guided surgery, CAD/CAM crown)
  • Prosthetically driven treatment planning and case selection
  • Prosthodontic considerations (including biomechanics, occlusion, aesthetics)
  • Use of digital planning software and CBCT scans
• Surgical Treatment
  • Basic implant surgical principles (including suturing)
  • Staged surgical learning (plastic models, pig’s jaw, cadaver head)
  • Live patient surgical treatment (2 cases)
  • Implant site preparation (including atraumatic extraction and ridge preservation techniques)
• Prosthodontic Treatment
  • Implant site development (including didactic concept on lateral window sinus approach, crestal approach, guided bone regeneration and review of materials such as different types of bone grafts and membrane)
  • Prevention and management of implant complications
  • Increase case acceptance and team training

SCHEDULE

• Lecture sessions will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• Participants may begin to arrive at 8:00 a.m. to sign-in.

Requirements

Participants must be licensed to practice dentistry in Ontario. This requirement is due to this course involving live patients. Dentists from outside Ontario who wish to take this course will need to obtain an Education License/Certificate for the duration of the clinical sessions (see RCDSO website for further information).

Participants are expected to bring their own patients for the clinical sessions. By doing so, participants will be able to follow-up with the patient after the course has ended. If you have difficulty bringing your own patients because you are coming from further away, please let us know as we may be able to help you find suitable patients.

Patients must be approved by our instructors before coming to the clinical sessions. Patient selection will be discussed at the beginning of the course and you will be guided through the selection process afterwards by our instructors.

Fees

Total course fee:
$19,895 

Course fee can be paid in three separate installments:

• $6,000 upon registration
• $6,000 by November 15, 2023
• $7,895 by December 15, 2023

After December 15, 2023, course fee must be paid in full.

The course fee covers the material cost of up to 2 implants and the crown restoration for each. The cost for additional implants and other details will be discussed at the beginning of the course.

This course fee also covers the cost of materials used in hands-on sessions. Lunch is provided for course participants.

Cancellations

Cancellations will be accepted until December 15, 2023 and are subject to a non-refundable fee of $1000. Refunds will not be granted after this final date.

Registrations are not transferable.

The University of Toronto reserves the right to cancel events. Registrants will be notified at the earliest possible date in the event of a cancellation. Registration fees for events cancelled by the University will be refunded in full; however, the University will not be liable for any loss, damages or other expenses that such cancellations may cause.

ACCREDITATION

This course is considered a Category 2 course by the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario. Full participation of this course will grant up to 186 CE points.
