Lecture & Hands-On

Predictable Post and Core: Mastering Techniques for the Compromised Tooth

Instructors: Dr. Bo Huang, Dr. Beatrice Leung and Dr. Fang-Chi (Alice) Li

May 23–24, 2026

Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the diagnosis, planning, and execution of post and core restorations for teeth with compromised structure.

Participants will explore the biomechanical principles, material science, and procedural steps required to achieve predictable and durable outcomes.

Through lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises, the course emphasizes evidence-based selection of post systems, adhesive and cementation protocols, and clinical techniques for post space preparation, impression method, post placement, core build-up and temporization.

    • Diagnose the restorability and plan appropriate post and core treatment strategies.
    • Select suitable post systems based on clinical conditions, tooth anatomy, and evidence-based guidelines.
    • Prepare post spaces accurately and safely, minimizing procedural complications.
    • Apply correct cementation techniques for different post materials to achieve optimal retention.
    • Build durable and well-contoured cores using appropriate materials and adhesive methods.
    • Identify and manage complications associated with post and core restorations.
    • Demonstrate clinical competence through hands-on exercises involving canal preparation, post placement, and core build-up.
    • Integrate current research findings into clinical decision-making to improve long-term treatment outcomes.
  • Please arrive within 30 minutes before the course start time to sign in.

Staff will be available at the Faculty of Dentistry’s Edward Street entrance to admit participants into the building as this building is not open to the public. If you arrive too early, you may need to wait until staff arrive.

Instructors

Dr. Bo Huang is currently an assistant professor at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto. She also works as an associate at Toronto Dental Specialists.

Dr. Huang completed her PhD in biomaterials at the Faculty of Dentistry and Institute of Biomedical Engineering, University of Toronto. Her research focus on improving our understanding of how human biofilm interacts with dental materials and translating this knowledge into development of new dental materials. Upon completion of dentistry and material science degrees, Dr. Huang pursued her passion for dentistry by completing 3-year Prosthodontics program at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto. As a board-certified prosthodontist in Canada, her scope of practice includes restoring oral function and esthetics by removable or/and fixed prostheses, replacing missing teeth by implant dentistry with both surgical and prosthetic approaches and managing various implant complications.

Throughout her academic career, Dr. Huang has been a recipient of various awards, scholarships and research grants including Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST), Ontario Graduate Scholarship, Acta Student Award, Nobel Biocare Research Fellowship in Prosthodontics and Dentsply Sirona Research Fellowship in Prosthodontics.

Dr. Leung received her DDS degree at the University of Toronto.  She completed a hospital residency at the Boston Medical Center and a Prosthodontics Residency at the University of Pittsburgh.  During that time, she also earned a Master of Public Health degree.  Following these programs, she became a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics. She has been in private practice since 2005.  Currently she serves as a part time Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto involved in the undergraduate prosthodontic education. She has been named an Honorary Class Member for three years and a recipient of the 2019-2020 Dr. Bruce Hord Master Teacher Award.

Dr. Alice Li currently works as an associate at Davisville Endodontics and Toronto Dental Specialists. She also serves as a part-time assistant professor at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry. Besides being a Fellow of The Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a board-certified endodontist in Canada, Dr. Li also earned the prestigious diplomate of American Board of Endodontics.

Dr. Li obtained her Ph.D. and M.Sc. (Endodontics) from the University of Toronto. In addition to clinical trainings, Dr. Li worked on researches of improving the biomechanical properties and fatigue resistance of endodontically treated dentin using engineered bioactive nanoparticles; and developing a 3D organoid model to study the cell signaling mechanism associated with regenerative endodontics. She has published many articles in peer-reviewed journals and received numerous international and national awards in the field of endodontics from the American Association of Endodontists, Journal of Endodontics and the Canadian Association for Dental Research. Dr. Li continues her research and teaching at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry, serves as a scientific advisory board member of peer-reviewed journals, as well as enjoys being an endodontist working in Toronto.
