IV Moderate Sedation

Course Description

IV Moderate Sedation is a course is designed for dentists who want to provide parenteral moderate sedation in their practice. This course meets the parenteral moderate sedation educational requirements of the RCDSO (Standard of Practice – Use of Sedation and General Anesthesia in Dental Practice). Registrants of this course should review the RCDSO Standard of Practice to understand the total requirement for providing this modality of sedation.

This course will cover:

  • Patient assessment for safety and appropriateness of IV sedation
  • Review of cardiovascular and respiratory physiology
  • Review of pharmacology of sedative agents
  • Review of sedation guidelines
  • Patient monitoring and recordkeeping
  • Office set-up
  • Sedation-related medical emergencies sessions
  • Hands-on venipuncture techniques
  • Hands-on patient sedations (20 cases)

Participants will have to successfully complete an evaluation on the knowledge and skills they have learned during this course.

PREREQUISITES

ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) Certification. Participants will need to have ACLS certification before the conclusion of the course.  You may take this course at Sunnybrook Hospital (see courses), The Michener Institute, Mt. Sinai Hospital, or other sites.  

Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office by Dr. Daniel Haas or Dr. Peter Nkansah, completed within 3 years of this course’s start date. Course must have been completed in-person, not online. (Register for the upcoming Medical Emergencies course.)

One of the two following:

  • Oral Moderate Sedation Authorization from the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) or from an equivalent Canadian Dental Regulatory Authority (authorization must be active at the time of the course), OR
  • Oral Sedation and Nitrous Oxide Sedation, by Dr. Daniel Haas or Dr. Peter Nkansah, completed within 3 years of this course’s start date. Participant must have passed the exam requirements for all modalities in the course. (Register for the upcoming Oral Sedation course.)
  • In order to fully participate in all hands-on sessions, participants must be licensed to practice dentistry in Ontario. Dentists from outside Ontario may still take this course, however they will not be permitted to administer nitrous oxide sedation on a live person. Instead, a demonstration will be provided for such dentists allowing them to become familiar with the complete procedure.

    Dentists from outside Ontario who wish to fully participate in the session involving administration of nitrous oxide sedation on a live person must obtain an Education License/Certificate for the duration of the course (see RCDSO website for further information).

  • Total tuition fee: $24,995

    • $1,000 non-refundable deposit at time of registration
    • $12,000.00 payable by February 1, 2026
    • $11,995.00 payable by April 1, 2026
  • Please arrive within 30 minutes before the course start time to sign in.

    Staff will be available at the Faculty of Dentistry’s Edward Street entrance to admit participants into the building as this building is not open to the public. If you arrive too early, you may need to wait until staff arrive.

    Hotels & Parking

  • This program will run Monday to Friday for two weeks.

  • Complimentary lunch is provided for course participants. Please indicate any dietary restrictions upon registration.

    Patients and clinical material/equipment are provided.

    You may need to bring your own safety glasses, loupes, and scrubs.

  • There is a $1,000 non-refundable fee.

    Cancellations made by April 15, 2026 will receive a full refund minus the non-refundable fee. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made after this date.

    Refunds will not be issued for registrants who do not attend, regardless of reason for absence.

    Registrations cannot be transferred to another individual.

    To cancel your registration, please follow the link and instructions provided in the registration confirmation email. If you are eligible for a refund, the refund will be processed automatically upon cancellation. Please allow 3-5 business days for the transaction to be completed.

  • After completing this course, a certificate of completion that indicates the number of Continuing Education (CE) points earned will be sent to you within 7-10 days by email.

Instructor

Dr. Nkansah received his DDS degree and Diploma in Dental Anaesthesia from the University of Toronto in 1993 and 1996, respectively. He currently maintains a private practice, Sleep For Dentistry, in Toronto, specializing in sedation dentistry for patients who are dentally anxious or medically compromised. Additionally, he serves as an Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry.

Dr. Nkansah is the Course Director for the conscious sedation continuing dental education course at Western University (Canada) and for Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support courses at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He is also a member of the editorial board for the dental journal Oral Health and regularly lectures for dental groups both nationally and internationally.

On the sports front, which is one of his other areas of interest, Dr. Nkansah is the team dentist for the Toronto Raptors of the NBA, the Raptors905 of the G-League, the Toronto FC of the MLS, and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
