Course Package Description

This Travel & Learn course package includes the following courses

1. Current Concepts on Management of Periodontitis

6 CE points (RCDSO approval pending Category 1)

  • For the last decade, research has demonstrated that the host immunoinflammatory response plays a greater role in the pathogenesis of periodontitis than the mere presence of bacteria. This paradigm shift has impacted the management of periodontitis. Rather than a simplistic focus on bacteria elimination, treatment strategies for managing periodontitis is becoming more complex and sophisticated that will reduce periodontal destruction and improve tooth retention. Saving periodontally involved teeth have become more critical as dental implants are demonstrating a limited lifespan associated with complex biological complications. This course will review the current concepts and strategies on management of periodontitis.

    • Understand the outcomes and limitations of nonsurgical therapy.
    • Explain the biologic concepts of adjunctive nonsurgical therapy, including use of antimicrobial therapy (systemic and local) and host modulation therapy.
    • Review the indications and contraindications of periodontal surgery
    • Understand the outcomes and limitations of osseous resective and regenerative surgeries.
    • Describe tissue engineering strategies in promoting periodontal regeneration.
    • Describe the role of preventive and periodontal maintenance therapy.

2. Soft Tissue Considerations and Management around Teeth and Dental Implants

3 CE points (Category 2)

  • With improved oral health care, patients are keeping their teeth longer. As a result, more patients may develop mucogingival deformities which can predispose them to increased gingival recession and inflammation. Patients may require periodontal plastic surgeries to improve periodontal health and/or improve aesthetics. Similarly, for dental implants, the presence of adequate quantity and quality of soft tissue plays an important role in the long-term maintenance and stability of peri-implant health. Understanding the fundamental principles of periodontal plastic surgeries will help the clinician decide if patients will benefit from these procedures. This course will review key situations when soft tissue grafting is required for both teeth and dental implants.

    • Explain the risks associated with gingival recession, lack of keratinized gingiva and thin phenotype around teeth and dental implants.
    • Describe the different types of periodontal plastic surgeries used to manage mucogingival defects around teeth and dental implants.
