Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive review of basic periodontal surgical techniques that can immediately be put into practice. In the didactic portion, proper diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient preparation prior to surgery will be discussed. Osseous resective surgery plays an important role in management of Stage II and Stage III Periodontitis with horizontal bone loss and shallow osseous craters. This course will review clinical situations where patients will benefit from osseous resective surgery. Flap design, techniques in osseous surgery and suturing are taught both didactic and hands-on format. The hands-on portion will provide attendees with the opportunity to practice osseous resective surgery and will also enhance general periodontal surgical skills such as flap design and suturing.

Upon completing this course:
- Review periodontal diagnoses and treatment planning
- Review the indications for periodontal surgery
- Understand the basic principles of periodontal surgery, flap design, and suturing
- Be aware of limitations and expected outcomes from surgical interventions
- Analyze and determine how to perform osteoplasty and ostectomy.
- Obtain hands-on experience in osseous resection, flap design and suturing

Instructor
Dr. Lai is the Vice-Dean of Education, and the former Director of Graduate Periodontics, for the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto. He obtained his Doctor of Dental Medicine and Doctor of Education at University of Pennsylvania. He completed his Master of Science and specialty training in periodontology at the University of Toronto. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, International College of Dentists, American College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.
