Course Description
This 7-day hands-on course is designed for general dentists who want to begin performing the prosthetic phase of implant dentistry in Ontario, and meets the initial educational requirements as set out by the RCDSO (Educational Requirements & Professional Responsibilities for Implant Dentistry). Dr. Leung will be providing 35 hours of instruction on the prosthetic phase, and Dr. Lai will be providing 14 hours of instruction for the surgical phase, meeting the requirements for dentists who will be limiting their practice to the prosthetic phase only.

Day 1, 2, 3: Implant Fixed Prosthodontics
- Understand various implant treatment solutions for partially edentulous patients
- Evaluate the restorative space for implant related treatment plan
- Understand the indications and contraindications for splinting implant restorations
- Analyse soft and hard tissue of the edentulous span to appreciate the possible surgical options
- Recognize the types of pre-prosthetic records required to work up a case towards implant treatment
- Formulate a treatment plan to support both the surgical and prosthetic implant treatment
- Understand the indications and contraindications for fixed implant solutions versus removable implant solutions
- Determine the number and distribution of implants appropriate for the implant prosthetic treatment
- Consider other functional and aesthetic factors relevant to the treatment planning process for implant treatment
- Perform a pre-prosthetic evaluation
- Perform impression planning
- Understand the advantages and disadvantages of open tray vs closed tray technique, custom tray vs. stock tray technique, analog workflow vs. digital workflow
- Identify the appropriate components to order for prosthetic treatment
- Identify the types of records required for prosthetic treatment
- Take implant level impression (open tray and closed tray)
- Understand the indication of verification jig
- Understand the common clinical challenges in insertion implant restoration
- Learn the sequence of steps in evaluating and insertion implant restorations
- Learn the indication and steps fabricating provisional chairside implant restorations
Day 4, 5: Surgical Implant Therapy
- Explain patient and anatomical considerations with respect to implant surgery.
- Perform pre-surgical assessment.
- Identify indications and contraindications of implant surgery.
- Explain implant placement and site development surgeries.
- Describe and differentiate different types of Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions.
Day 6, 7: Implant Removable Prosthodontics / Advanced Implant Prosthodontics
- Understand various implant treatment solutions for completely edentulous patients
- Understand the considerations for the various implant related solutions for completely edentulous patients
- Understand the various prosthetic pathways for implant overdenture solutions
- Take implant level, abutment level impression for implant overdenture
- Convert conventional denture to implant overdenture
- Understand concepts of AP spread and cantilevering in complex prosthodontic implant treatment planning
- Perform proper record keeping for implant treatment
- Recognize common prosthetic complications and learn ways to prevent them
- Observe various completed simple and complex cases requiring implant dentistry
- Understand the types of materials and components available for prosthetic implant restorations and their advantages and their disadvantages

Please arrive within 30 minutes before the course start time to sign in.
Staff will be available at the Faculty of Dentistry’s Edward St entrance to admit participants into the building as this building is not open to the public. If you arrive too early, you may need to wait until staff arrive.

This course consists of 7 in-person sessions. Each session will be held 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Instructors
Dr. Leung is a distinguished dental professional with a rich academic and clinical background. She earned her DDS degree from the University of Toronto, followed by a General Practice Residency at Boston Medical Center and a Prosthodontics Residency at the University of Pittsburgh, where she also completed a Master of Public Health degree.
A recognized leader in her field, Dr. Leung is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics. Since completing her training, she has been dedicated to private practice while also sharing her expertise as a part-time Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, where she plays a key role in undergraduate prosthodontic education.
Dr. Leung’s contributions to dental education have earned her the title of Honorary Class Member for three consecutive years and the prestigious Dr. Bruce Hord Master Teacher Award for 2019-2020.
Dr. Lai is the Vice-Dean of Education, and the former Director of Graduate Periodontics, for the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto. He obtained his Doctor of Dental Medicine and Doctor of Education at University of Pennsylvania. He completed his Master of Science and specialty training in periodontology at the University of Toronto. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, International College of Dentists, American College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.
