Course Description

Our Small Field-of-View Cone Beam CT (CBCT) course is designed to introduce dentists to the principles of CBCT and its applications in dentistry. This course fulfills the educational requirements specified by the RCDSO for utilizing small field-of-view dental CT scanners as outlined in Standards of Practice – Dental CT Scanners. Dentists who successfully complete this course and fulfill the assessment requirements will receive a certificate of completion.

The course covers essential topics including radiation physics and biology, radiologic prescription, acquisition of CBCT volumes, image interpretation, and reporting. Special focus will be given to CBCT software utilization, interpretation, and reporting of dentoalveolar CBCT (DACT) imaging volumes.

IMPORTANT

The course requires that each participant have competency in the following computer skills: downloading files, installation and troubleshooting of software installation, mouse “point-and-click” skills. Participants are required to bring a PC laptop computer purchased within the last 4 years with at least 1 functional USB port and at least 4 GB RAM. Participants should also have a version of Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on their laptop for displaying PDF files. A wired or wireless mouse is also needed.

Apple computers are not compatible.

  • This course will cover the following:

    1. The biological effects of ionizing radiation and radiation dosimetry
    2. Patient selection criteria and the radiographic examination
    3. Review of normal anatomy in CBCT scans
    4. Image interpretation of oral and maxillofacial pathoses including cases
    5. Reporting of findings in the image data
    6. Medical legal issues and risk management
    7. Participants will also gain experience in reviewing scan cases and reporting the findings.

  • Cancellations made more than 10 calendar days before the course start date will receive a full refund. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made within 10 calendar days of the course start date.

    Refunds will not be issued for registrants who do not attend, regardless of reason for absence.

Instructor

Dr. Miles is an Adjunct Professor at the Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine in El Paso, Texas and a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and the American Board of Oral Medicine. He taught oral and maxillofacial radiology at 6 different dental schools over 28 years. Dr. Miles has been named one of the “TOP 100 CLINICANS IN CE” for the last 14 years by Dentistry Today. He has authored over 135 scientific articles and 5 textbooks, including the most popular atlas of Cone Beam Imaging. Dr. Miles has been a Consultant to the US Navy Postgraduate Dental School in Oral Radiology for over 20 years.

Dr. Miles has a website for teaching dentists and auxiliaries about digital imaging at learndigital.net and CBCT at doctorconebeam.com. He left academia in 2006 to re-enter private practice in full-time practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in Fountain Hills, Arizona. To date he’s read over 38,000 cone beam CT scans for dental clients.
