Lecture & Hands-On

Orthodontic Procedures for Level II Dental Assistants and Dental Hygienists

Instructors: Dr. Natoosha Nargaski, Dr. Mark Eckler, Dr. Michael Sherman and Cynthia Dias

October 27–29, 2023

This course in orthodontic procedures taught by Faculty experts, community orthodontists, and an orthodontic hygienist contains a lecture component (didactic), which teaches the theoretical information required in order to understand the intra-oral procedures listed in the Guideline, and a clinical component (hands-on), which teaches the intra-oral procedures listed in the Colleges Guideline.

This course meets the RCDSO criteria for a supplemental course in orthodontic procedures for Level II Dental Assistants as outline in the College’s Guideline (including Appendix 1) – Performance of Intra-Oral Procedures that are Not Controlled Acts by Preventive Dental Assistants, Level II Dental Assistants and Registered Dental Hygienists.

Participants will be sent a course manual/study material two weeks prior to the course and are required to read and study the material before attending the course. As outlined in the Guideline, participants will be evaluated on the components of each of the lecture (didactic) and clinical (hands-on) components of the course so as to determine whether the person is able to perform the intra-oral procedures and be issued a signed certificate of completion.

This supplemental course in orthodontic procedures for Level II Dental Assistants will teach participants to perform the four intra-oral orthodontic procedures as outlined in the RCDSO’s new Guideline (including Appendix 1). The course will teach participants the following four intra-oral procedures:

  • placing and cementing bands, brackets and passive space-maintaining or orthodontic appliances that have been previously selected, fitted and/or dispersed by a dentist for orthodontic purposes;
  • placing attachments for orthodontic purposes in conjunction with clear aligner therapy;
  • removing bands, brackets and passive space-maintaining or orthodontic appliances, but not removing cement and/or bonding resin; and
  • taking non-alginate conventional impressions (i.e., non-digital) for working models for the fabrication of space-maintaining or orthodontic appliances.
  • The course fee includes patient simulation and teaching models (typodonts) which participants can keep for patient education and continued training after the course. Advanced courses will be offered in which the typodonts can be used.

The learning objectives include:

  • An introduction to orthodontics
  • Classification of orthodontic case types and common treatment options
  • Names and uses of orthodontic appliances
  • Bracket placement: how, why and where
  • Bonding procedures for brackets and attachments (etching and priming), anterior and posterior bite turbos
  • Placing attachments in conjunction with clear aligner therapy
  • Bonding and cementing bands and passive appliances
  • Bracket and attachment removal
  • Taking alginate, digital, and non-alginate conventional impressions (i.e., non-digital)
  • Practice management, including customer service, the patient experience, and practice development

The course is open to Level II Dental Assistants who have had a minimum of one-year clinical experience. This course is designed for Level II Dental Assistants and not Dental Hygienists; however, Dental Hygienists may attend the course. Please note that some information in the course will be for information purposes only.
