Oral inflammation and its links to oral and systemic health: Novel approaches to screening and monitoring

Course Description: 

We will review how oral leukocytes are key clinical biomarkers of oral inflammation, the role of an oral leukocyte count as an effective screening tool for oral inflammation similar to a white blood cell count serving as a screening tool for infection, how oral inflammation impacts the systemic immune response and the future or screening for oral inflammation in the dental setting.

Educational Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Appreciate based on recent evidence the impact of oral inflammation on overall immune health
  2. Appreciate the importance of educating patients on the role of oral inflammation on overall health
  3. Appreciate the importance of being able to screen for oral inflammation in the dental setting

Dr. Glogauer is an internationally-recognized dental clinician scientist (DDS, 1993 PhD 1999, Dip Perio, 1999) and a leader in the fields of dentistry, oral immunity, oral diseases, alveolar bone grafting and the links between oral health and systemic health. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School (1999-2001). He is a Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto (since 2002), Head of Dentistry for University Health Network, Chief of Dental Oncology at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and owner of OMGPerio, a periodontal and dental implant practice in Hamilton Ontario. He has received awards for recognition of scientific excellence (Quality of Life research award from Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)-IMHA-2006) and has been funded by MRC/CIHR since 1994. He has generated over 240 peer reviewed publications in the fields of dentistry, oral health and immunology with over 18,500 citations and an H-Factor of 67. He has 5 patents and is CEO and co-founder of start-up Ostia Sciences which focuses on the oral microbiome testing and probiotic development. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
