General Practice Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Fellowship

The General Practice Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Fellowship is a one-year (12 month) training program designed specifically for advanced training in oral surgery for general dentists with the goal of increasing the knowledge and surgical skills and as a steppingstone to the eventual specializing in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS). This program consists of lectures, seminars, research, and clinical practice in both the Faculty of Dentistry and affiliated hospitals. The program director is Dr. Marco Caminiti, Graduate Program Director, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Successful applicants will be registered as students in the Faculty of Dentistry for the length of their appointment. Candidates are encouraged to enroll in some courses and be engaged in a clinical research project with the goal of presentation and publication.

Participants (learners) will gain basic knowledge required for proper understanding of OMS and will be involved in patient evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, and surgical care. Learners will spend 2 days per week in the operating room and 1 day per week in the clinic, with the remaining time dedicated to the research support needed at the OMS program.

The program will cover the following areas:

  • Oral and maxillofacial/TMJ services
  • OMS pathology
  • Reconstructive services
  • Coverage of Trauma
  • Orthognathic and TMJ workup up, surgery and follow-up
  • Interventional program (Botox, various anesthetic blocks including fluoroscopy and ultrasound guided techniques)

    The learner will shadow a junior resident with didactic and clinical participation at Mount Sinai Hospital, Humber River Regional Hospital, and Sunnybrook Hospital with commitments in the OMFS clinic at the Faculty of Dentistry. Learners will be registered and participate in Dental Resident Seminars and OMFS with active participation in weekly academic rounds.

Successful completion of this program will result in the participant receiving a certificate of completion from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry. This certificate does not confer specialty or advanced degree status.

Program Overview

The program is divided into two modules.

  • This module is focused on the basic knowledge required for proper understanding and management of OMS.

    1.1. Didactic Component of the Module

    1.1.1. Gross Anatomy

    This course is designed to provide an understanding of the gross structure and function of all human body systems, including basic embryological content, neuroanatomy, and systems anatomy.

    In addition, a comprehensive, detailed study of the head, neck and central nervous system is undertaken to provide the participants with a basis upon which to build his/her clinical knowledge. The learners will be required to perform a basic dissection of the thorax and a comprehensive dissection of the neck and head in order to complement and reinforce the lecture series. Topics using the high-quality published research and present it weekly in a mentor- guided session:

    • Growth, development, and aging of the masticatory system
    • Head and neck pathology and pathophysiology
    • Epidemiology of OFS disorders
    • Pharmacology and pharmacotherapeutics
    • Surgery
    • TMJ
    • Orthognathic and reconstructive surgery
    • Implants
    • Dentoalveolar
    • Trauma
    • Anesthesia

    Learners are also encouraged to bring new theories and concepts on the subject matter for group discussion.

    1.1.2. Temporomandibular Disorders

    The objective of this course is to integrate the latest evidence in basic and clinical sciences related to OMSs including the temporomandibular disorders, in order to improve knowledge on pain differential diagnosis, etiologies, mechanisms and evidence-based management. The course will also address the socioeconomic burden of acute and chronic pain, in addition to their effects on the patient’s quality of life. The topics will be presented by various scholars, dental and medical specialists.

    1.1.3. Other courses
    • DENS2005Y: Surgical Orthodontics: every Wednesday afternoon from 2-5 in the orthodontic clinic at the faculty of dentistry and from 5-7 a seminar which will be the responsibility of the fellow to organize.

    1.1.4. Additional Required Activities
    The learners will join the attending staff at all the program’s locations for assisting in the operating room or clinic and engage in research activity. Currently the location include Mount Sinai Hospital; Sunnybrook Hospital; Humber River and possible rotations to Holland Bloorview Hospitals and The Hospital for Sick Children.

    1.2. Clinical Component of the Module

    Learners will be gradually involved in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with OMS issues by observing, assisting, and then providing care. The learners will be engaged in managing a wide variety of patients and will learn how to provide a stepwise diagnostic process and treatment planning when managing OMS patients.

    1.2.1 Quality Assurance/Chart Review Rounds

    Chart audit sessions are performed to allow participants the opportunity to discuss patient care issues outside of the time-limited clinic setting. The objective is to help learners recognize complex and often hidden treatment issues, to provide exposure to different perspectives of care and to facilitate learners’ ability to receive constructive criticism.

  • This module enables the participants to understand and critically appraise dental literature and consists of several didactic sessions, workshops, seminars, individual interactions with the mentors, and self- directed learning. It aims to provide an overview of the basic concepts of evidence-based dentistry, and guidelines that participants can apply most effectively to use articles to guide their clinical practice and to inform their clinical decisions.

    2.1. Required Course

    Clinical Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Care: This course, offered at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, will demonstrate the scientific basis for clinical decision-making in prognosis, causation, diagnosis and therapy following the principles of evidence- based health care. Examples from the dental literature are used to illustrate the concepts and their practical application. The specific objectives of the course are: 1) to introduce principles of epidemiology as applied to clinical research; 2) to provide Clinical Specialty Graduate students with the fundamental scientific skills in clinical epidemiology to enable them to practice evidence-based dental care; 3) to provide the students with skills in answering questions using biomedical literature; 4) to provide students with the skills needed to critically appraise a biomedical research article.

    The participants will spend 1 day per week attending the research rounds and working on their assigned research projects related to the interest of the Discipline of Dentistry. Participants are expected to be involved in at least one relevant research project and perform analysis of clinical research data, as well as and present it during educational and research rounds and when appropriate, publish the findings (ideally more than 2 papers) in a refereed journal. All participants have to attend the Online tutorial TCPS 2: CORE course which is an introduction to the 2nd  edition of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS2). Additionally, the participants are expected to attend the following modules from the Office of Research Ethics: Data protection (online); Passwords and encryption (online); Research ethics 101 lecture (in-person): a one to three-hour long lecture, which is available upon request; Research ethics seminar (in-person). Evaluation

To determine whether the participants are meeting the standard of competence and performance specified in various stages of curriculum a systematic assessment intended to be used. This assessment includes a variety of multiple techniques from certificate of successful attendance to course test completion and work-place assessments. The portfolio will be reviewed with the Program Director during the Program Director meeting that occurs once a month. As a part of participant’s evaluation for Advanced Training Program in OMS, a clinical performance examination (CPE) is being developed. The exam uses an Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) stations and constitutes the final examination as well. The rating form will be developed to assess the degree to which the trainee has achieved the objectives of the Advanced Training Program in OMS. The participants are also expected to keep a written log (paper or electronic) of their clinical activities and encounters. For the self-directed learning activities, the participants must prepare and present a written summary of main learning points.

The duration of this program is 12 months.

Application Requirements

In order to be considered for this program, applicants must submit a completed Application Form and supporting documentation to CDE via email by the application deadline date. All documents (except photo) must be submitted as PDF files.

Review and verification of documentation may take 3-5 business days upon receipt. Once completed, an email will be sent to notify applicants if their application is complete, or if anything is still pending.

  • A copy of your degree/diploma and your official transcripts from a minimum four-year university dental program. Degrees/diplomas and transcripts that are not in English must be submitted with a certified translation.

  • If your dental school instruction was not in English, you must provide documentation of English language proficiency by completing an English proficiency test.

    Test results are valid for 2 years from the date of the exam.

    1. TOEFL iBT (includes iBT Home Edition): A minimum total score of 100 is required with a minimum of 27 in Writing, 23 in Speaking, 24 in Listening, and 24 in Reading.
    2. IELTS (Academic): A minimum Overall Band Score of 7.5 is required with no band lower than 7.0 in each of the four sections.
    3. CELPIP: A minimum overall score of 8.0 is required with no component score lower than 8.0 in each of the four sections.
  • A resume/CV summarizing your Dental Education, your Professional Dental Experience, any Continuing Dental Education courses, and other Additional Information, such as awards, publications, affiliations, etc.

  • A letter of intent, describing your reason for participating in this program, and how it relates to your academic background, career goals, and qualifications.

  • Letters should consist of:

    • One letter by a recognized dental faculty member or a specialist in the field.
    • One letter of choice. This additional letter should be from an instructor or similar individual who is able to evaluate the applicant’s knowledge, skill, character, and potential for success in the program.

    Letters should include an assessment of the applicant’s dental background, knowledge, skill, character, and potential for success in the program. Letters must be signed and on official letterhead. Only letters written in English will be accepted.

  • A recent passport-size colour photo with a white background. Submit a high-quality version of the photo. (Accepted file formats: JPG, JPEG, PNG.)

Fees

All fees must be made in Canadian Dollars (CAD).

Tuition Fee

Total tuition fee for full clinical participation: $85,000

Payment Schedule

Will be communicated upon acceptance.

Refunds

Deposit fee is non-refundable.

Failure to meet the tuition fee deadlines will result in the cancellation of your position in the program. No refunds will be issued in this case.

Additionally, regardless of reason, no refunds will be issued after the start date of the program.

2.  Interview

Applicants are invited to interview by personal invitation only and will be notified via email if they are selected. The email invitation will include scheduling instructions and further details. Interviews will be in-person if possible, or online via Zoom.

Please note: Candidates are required to interview for further admission consideration.

3.  Decision Process

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria: 

  • academic achievements, 
  • English language proficiency, 
  • content of letters of recommendation, 
  • strong work ethic, and 
  • outstanding interpersonal strengths.

3.  Acceptance

Applicants who meet the standards for acceptance into the program will be provided a letter of acceptance via email. 

A position in the program will only be secured when applicant has paid the deposit fee.

Acceptance will be on a rolling basis until the program is full.
