Mitigation of Medical Risk for the General Dentist

Course Description

The purpose of this course is to educate the general dentist on how to minimize medical risks during dental procedures and within the dental setting. Risks from common medical conditions and of circumstances occurring within the dental office will be explored. Specifics will address risk assessment of patients, risk mitigation within the operatory room along with common pharmacological agents prescribed by both physicians and dentists. Special situations that pose an inherently greater medical risk to the general dentist will also be discussed. Participants will learn basic medical physical examinations, expand skills regarding medical history taking and inter-professional communication.

  • Upon completing this course:

    1.  Improve your medical history intake, sequential review updates and communication skills.

    • Learn important questions to ask.
    • Learn basic vital assessment for the dentist.
    • Learn basic physical exam for the dentist to identify a deteriorating patient.
    • Expand you inter-professional and patient communication skill set.

    2.  Learn to customize the dental experience to mitigate medical risk from the following conditions:

    • Hypertension
    • Coronary Artery Disease
    • Asthma
    • COPD
    • Diabetes
    • Thyroid Diseases

    3.  Learn risk stratification and mitigation for the following high medical risk situations:

    • The Surgical Patient on Blood Thinners
    • The Sedation Patient
    • The Allergic Patient
    • The Emergency Patient

Speaker

Dr. Prince is a Dentist Anesthesiologist who primarily works in private practice throughout Ontario while is also a part-time clinical instructor at U of T. He obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario and completed the Graduate Dental Anesthesia Specialty Program at the University of Toronto while acquiring his Master of Science (M.Sc.).
