Course Description
This comprehensive course focuses on the essential surgical and prosthetic principles involved in crown lengthening. Designed for dental professionals seeking to enhance their understanding and skills in this complex procedure, the course will cover clinical indications, treatment planning, and both surgical and restorative techniques. Participants will gain hands-on experience in performing crown lengthening and tooth preparation with a focus on optimizing functional and aesthetic outcomes. Emphasis will also be placed on the integration of prosthetic considerations during surgical planning to ensure long-term success of restorations.

Upon completing this course:
- Identify the indications and contraindication of crown lengthening.
- Describe different flap design and how to apply them in different clinical situations.
- Analyze and determine how to perform osteoplasty and ostectomy.
- Perform comprehensive aesthetic assessment for crown lengthening cases.
- Apply tooth preparation principles for aesthetic cases, damaged vital and endodontically treated teeth.

Staff will be available at the Faculty of Dentistry’s Edward St entrance to admit participants into the building as this building is not open to the public. If you arrive too early, you may need to wait until staff arrive.

Instructors
Dr. Lai is the Vice-Dean of Education, and the former Director of Graduate Periodontics, for the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto. He obtained his Doctor of Dental Medicine and Doctor of Education at University of Pennsylvania. He completed his Master of Science and specialty training in periodontology at the University of Toronto. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, International College of Dentists, American College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.
Dr. Ming-Yi Chou completed her prosthodontic specialty training and obtained both a Certificate in Prosthodontics and Master of Science degree in Prosthodontics from the University of North Carolina, USA, in 2009. She was awarded the G. Randolph and Ann Babcock Fellowships for 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 academic years. This additional training focuses on comprehensive planning and treatment involving full mouth rehabilitation, treatment of edentulism, and rehabilitation of the worn dentition. Her specialty training included particular interests in contemporary esthetic dental restorations and dental implant therapy.
Dr. Chou received her degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, where she graduated with distinction in 2006. She received many scholarships and awards, including the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario Scholarship, Dr. Sam Ioannidis Memorial Award in Operative Dentistry, the Toronto Academy Crown and Bridge Study Club Award and Dr. Walter R. Teteruck Award in Fixed Prosthodontics for exemplifying outstanding clinical performance.
Dr. Chou is a member of the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP), the Association of Prosthodontists of Canada (APC) and the Association of Prosthodontists of Ontario (APO). She is a Past President of the APO. She is an examiner for the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and the National Dental Examining Board for a number of years. Dr. Chou currently serves as a Board Director for the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. Furthermore, she also serves as an executive member of the Toronto East Dental Society under the Ontario Dental Association.
Dr. Chou lectures both locally and internationally, teaches at the Graduate Prosthodontics department at University of Toronto as an associate in dentistry and also at the University of North Carolina as an Adjunct Assistant Professor.
