The Association for Continuing Dental Education (ACDE), along with 37 of its member schools, is jointly providing a series of live webinars. This series features university-based key opinion leaders presenting numerous topics on multiple dates and times. Presentations are available to meet every dental professionalâs schedule and interests.
Course Description
This engaging virtual lecture explores the integration of phase contrast microscopy into dental hygiene practice to enhance patient education, improve treatment planning, and support a shift from reactive to proactive care. Participants will learn how visualizing oral biofilm in real time can increase patient awareness, motivation, and compliance. Through clinical case studies, attendees will examine how microscopic findings can guide individualized treatment decisions, aid in early detection of periodontal disease, and strengthen the oralâsystemic connection. Practical strategies for incorporating microscopy into patient communication and clinical workflows will be emphasized.

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Prepare and observe dental samples, identifying key features relevant to clinical practice
- Demonstrate the ability to identify periodontal pathogens using a phase contrast microscope.
- Recognize early indicators of periodontal disease through microscopic observation.
- Discuss strategies for effectively communicating microscopic findings to patients.
- Implement preventive measures informed by microscopic insights to enhance patient oral health.

Presenter
Trina Hutto is an Assistant Professor in the Dental Hygiene Program at Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University. She holds a Doctor of Education (EdD) in Educational Leadership from Northcentral University, along with a postgraduate certificate in Organizational Coaching from University of Georgia. Dr. Hutto earned a Master of Science in Higher Education from Kaplan University in 2013 and a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene from Medical College of Georgia in 2008. She also completed a 60-hour certificate program in myofunctional therapy, further broadening her expertise in oral-systemic health and functional rehabilitation.
With nearly 20 years of clinical experience, Dr. Hutto began her career as a certified dental assistant, practicing for ten years before transitioning to dental hygiene. She then gained five years of experience as a registered dental hygienist before entering academia. In her current role, she serves as Course Director for Periodontology and Radiology and Co-Director of Research Design.
