The Association for Continuing Dental Education (ACDE), along with 37 of its member schools, is jointly providing a series of live webinars. This series features university-based key opinion leaders presenting numerous topics on multiple dates and times. Presentations are available to meet every dental professional’s schedule and interests.
Course Description
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease affecting all age groups. It is one of the most common disorders and it is said to affect almost 20 million people in the United States. Patients suffering from diabetes have numerous oral manifestations and as such dental practitioners must become familiar with this disorder. In this webinar we will review the pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy commonly used to treat diabetes. We will discuss the drugs used and their Adverse Drug Reactions and Drug Interactions. We will review the oral manifestations and complications of diabetes mellitus and the common medical emergencies that may be encountered in the dental office.

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Recognize the prevalence, incidence and etiology of diabetes mellitus.
- Understand (a) the pathophysiology and (b) pharmacotherapy of diabetes.
- Understand some of the common complications such as dental caries, periodontal disease, fungal infection and salivary dysfunction.
- Introduce the appropriate procedures in dental practice required to optimize dental care for the patient with diabetes.
- Recognize and manage medical emergencies in these patients.

Presenter
Dr. Aviv Ouanounou is an associate professor of pharmacology and Preventive Dentistry at the faculty of dentistry, University of Toronto. He received both his DDS and MSc at the University of Toronto. He teaches pharmacology and Preventive Dentistry to undergraduate and graduate students and is also a clinical instructor and Treatment Plan Coordinator in the University clinics. Dr. Ouanounou is regularly invited to speak at conferences locally, nationally and internationally. Dr. Ouanounou won numerous teaching awards including winning “Best Teacher of the Year Award” at the faculty of dentistry, three times: in 2013, 2015 and in 2019. Also, Dr. Ouanounou is the recipient of the 2014-2015 prestigious Dr. Bruce Hord Master Teacher Award for excellence in teaching at the University of Toronto and is the 2018-2019 Recipient of the W.W. Wood Award for Excellence in Dental Education. Dr. Ouanounou is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists and the Pierre Fouchard Academy. He is a member of the American Academy of Pain Management and the American College of Clinical Pharmacology. He has published and authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals. He also maintains a general private practice in Toronto.
