ACDE Webinar Series

ACDE (Association for Continuing Dental Education)

The Association for Continuing Dental Education (ACDE), along with 37 of its member schools, is jointly providing a series of live webinars. This series features university-based key opinion leaders presenting numerous topics on multiple dates and times. Presentations are available to meet every dental professional’s schedule and interests.

Course Description

This lecture explores the new era of athletic mouthguards—where protection meets precision and performance. Participants will discover how digital scanning, CAD/CAM workflows, and 3D printing have transformed the design and fabrication of custom mouthguards, offering superior fit and reproducibility. The session also highlights the integration of biometric sensor and chip technology within mouthguards, enabling real-time monitoring of impact, hydration, respiration, and other performance metrics. By blending digital dentistry, materials innovation, and sports technology, this course showcases how modern mouthguards have evolved into intelligent tools that enhance both athlete safety and performance insight.

  • Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

    • Define the key functions and design principles of traditional and custom athletic mouthguards in sports dentistry.
    • Describe how digital impression systems, CAD design, and 3D printing technologies improve precision, comfort, and reproducibility in mouthguard fabrication.
    • Discuss the integration of biometric sensor technology and smart chips within mouthguards to collect data on athlete performance and safety metrics.
    • Evaluate current research trends, clinical applications, and opportunities for digital and intelligent mouthguards in sports protection and performance monitoring
