Course Synopsis

The small field-of-view cone beam CT (CBCT) has both didactic and clinical “hands-on” components that will introduce the clinician to the principles of CBCT and its applications in dentistry consistent with RCDSO and ODQ education guidelines for the operation of CBCT systems.

The course will be presented in 2 parts.

Part One: This part of the course will be held January 19 and 20, 2018, and will consist of didactic lectures and handson imaging processing of imaging volumes.

Topics will include:

  1. The biological effects of ionizing radiation and radiation dosimetry.
  2. Normal anatomy and variations.
  3. Image interpretation.
  4. Benign space-occupying lesions.
  5. Inflammation and malignant neoplasia.
  6. Temporomandibular joint imaging.
  7. Dento-alveolar trauma.
  8. Dysplastic lesions of bone.
  9. Dental implant imaging and image processing.
  10. Limitations, reporting and case selection.

Part Two: This part of the course will include a 45 minute morning session where the practical considerations of CBCT will be discussed, and then be followed by a 2 hour examination consisting of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank and short answer questions, as well as a review of 2 CBCT volumes. Enrollees must obtain at least a 60% for a passing grade. Part 2 will be held at the Faculty of Dentistry; date and time TBD.

IMPORTANT: A prerequisite of the course is a knowledge of basic computer skills including downloading and installation of program files, and troubleshooting. A PC-based laptop is required that has a minimum 2 MB RAM and an NVIDIA GeoForce or ATI 4000, 5000 or 6000 series videocard. The image processing software is not supported by Apple computers. Please bring a laptop with these minimum hardware requirements on Saturday January 20, 2018 and on the test date.
